William Sulzer Alaska mining papers, 1901-1941.

The William Sulzer Alaska Mining Papers consist of business correspondence, financial records, and legal documents relating primarily to Sulzer's mining interests in the Chandalar Mining District of Alaska (Alaska-Chandalar Mining Company, Chandalar Gold Company, Chandalar Gold Mines, Inc.), but also to his interests in Southeast Alaska and the White River Mining District. The collection includes an album of 106 photographs dating to 1926, many of them well identified. They depict mining claims, persons, and scenery of Southeast Alaska, the Chandalar region, and other Alaskan locations.

New York politician William Sulzer (1863-1941) served as a United States Representative from New York (1895-1912). During 1912 Sulzer chaired the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. In January, 1913 Sulzer was elected governor of New York State. Shortly after his inauguration, he was impeached by the New York State Assembly on charges of having diverted campaign funds to his own use. Sulzer asserted that false charges had been brought against him because he refused to follow the wi...
